Before I Say Yes
Individual work
- The teacher assigns one or more cards to the student.
- The student reads each situation and thinks of one question they would ask before saying yes.
- The teacher can model an answer before the activity.
- Encourage the student to use a different question starter for each card and explain why they need this information.
Pair/group work (including breakout rooms)
- The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group.
- Students take turns reading a situation and asking their question before saying yes.
- The other students listen, suggest other useful questions, and ask follow-up questions.
- Encourage students to compare their ideas and decide which question is the most important.
Extra ideas:
- Students think of three possible questions and choose the most important one.
- Students use a different phrase starter for every card.
- One student reads a card; their partner asks a question immediately.
- Students explain why they would not say yes without this information.
- Students compare two situations and decide which one needs more questions.
- Students rank the cards from easiest to hardest to say yes to.
- Students create one new situation card for the class.
- Set a short timer and ask students to think of a question before time runs out.
