Ahead of Time

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

Individual work

  • The teacher assigns each student one or more prompt cards with different time frames and topics.
  • Students read the prompts and make 2–3 predictions using the future perfect about what will have been completed by that time.
  • They prepare their ideas and think of possible explanations.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)
  • The teacher assigns one or more prompt cards to each pair or group.
  • Students work in pairs or small groups (2–4 students).
  • They take turns reading the prompts and sharing their predictions.
  • Students ask follow-up questions (e.g. “Why do you think that will have happened?”, “How will this have changed?”).
  • They compare ideas and decide which predictions are more realistic or more surprising.

    Class sharing
  • Invite some students or groups to share their predictions with the class.
  • Other students can agree, disagree, or add alternative ideas.
  • Focus on clear use of the future perfect and justification of opinions.

    Extra ideas
  • Realistic / unlikely / surprising: the class reacts to each prediction.
  • Find the boldest idea: which prediction seems the most extreme or unexpected?
