Alias Cards (Different Topics)

Speaking activity Free

Enhance vocabulary and quick thinking through word description and guessing.

Online Play:

  1. Send the cards privately to your students before the game.

  2. Divide students into teams or pairs.

  3. In each round, one student (the describer) explains the words on the card without saying the word itself. Their team/pair guesses the words as quickly as possible.

  4. Each round is timed (1-2 minutes suggested). Switch the describer each round.

  5. Teams earn a point for each correctly guessed word. Keep track of scores.

  6. If the players play individually, you can assign 1 point to the describer for each word that has been guessed, and one point to the guesser.
  7. Winner: The team with the most points after a set number of rounds wins.

Offline Play:

  1. Print the Alias cards before class.

  2. Divide students into teams or pairs in the classroom.

  3. Follow the same rules as online play. Students take turns drawing cards and describing the words to their teammates.

  4. Feel free to adapt the timing and scoring to suit your class size and lesson duration.

Note: This game encourages quick thinking, vocabulary recall, and teamwork, making it a versatile and engaging tool for both online and offline ESL learning.
