Bare Minimum

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to use:

Individual work

- The teacher gives each student one or more prompt cards with different concepts.
- Students read the prompts and decide what the bare minimum is for each concept to still count as “real.”
- They prepare 1–2 sentences explaining their idea.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)

- The teacher gives one or more prompt cards to each pair or group.
- Students work in pairs or small groups (2–4 students).
- They take turns discussing the prompts and explaining their “bare minimum.”
- Students can challenge each other and ask follow-up questions (e.g. “Is that enough?”, “Why?”)
- They compare answers and decide whose definition is stricter or more realistic.

Class sharing
- Invite some students or groups to share their ideas with the class.
- Other students can agree, disagree, or add conditions.
- Focus on clear explanations and justification of opinions.

Extra ideas
- Too low / realistic / too high: the class reacts to each answer.
- Find the extreme: who has the lowest and highest “minimum” in the group?
