Concept Crash

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to Use This Activity

Individual Work
Each student receives one Concept Crash card with two abstract nouns (e.g. Freedom + Technology). They prepare a short 1–2 minute talk explaining how the two concepts connect, clash, or influence each other. Encourage them to use complex linkers (whereas, nonetheless, albeit), abstract noun phrases, and clear argument structure.

Pair or Group Work
Students work in pairs or small groups. Each group picks one card and prepares a joint mini-presentation connecting the two concepts. They must agree on a central argument or paradox. After presenting, other groups challenge their reasoning by asking questions or pointing out contradictions. Rotate cards so each group discusses several pairs.

Class Sharing
Invite groups to present their best talk to the class. Listeners can evaluate arguments for clarity, creativity, and use of advanced language. Optionally, students vote for Most Creative Connection or Most Convincing Argument.

Extra Ideas

- Turn it into a debate: half the class argues that the two concepts can coexist, the other half argues they cannot.
- Ask students to invent one new pair of concepts and challenge another group with it.
- Record short talks and let students self-assess vocabulary and fluency.
- Create a “Crash Wall” in class where students post the most mind-bending connections they came up with.
