Conditionals 1,2,3
Use this activity to practise the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd conditionals in a natural, communicative way. Students will discuss real and imaginary situations, share personal ideas, and listen actively to their partner — all while getting comfortable with conditional structures.
Instructions:
-
Give each student a selection of prompts (or the full set).
-
Students work in pairs or small groups and take turns discussing the prompts.
-
Each student says a full sentence using the correct conditional.
-
Encourage follow-up questions and natural reactions.
-
-
After the discussion, each student chooses one sentence their partner said that they liked, found funny, surprising, or interesting.
📝 Note!
There’s often more than one correct answer. Depending on how students understand the situation, the same prompt can be used with different conditionals — and that’s great!
Encourage them to explain why they chose that conditional and what it means in context.
