Convince me that...Autumn

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to Use This Activity:

Individual Work
The student looks at one autumn statement on the screen (e.g. “Autumn selfies look better than summer selfies”). The student tries to convince the listener, speaking for a few sentences and giving at least one reason.
Encourage the student to use opinion phrases and add one extra detail to make the argument stronger.

Pair or Group Work
- Students work in pairs or small groups. One student reads a statement aloud and argues in favour. Another student argues against. Then they switch roles with a new statement.
- Groups can set a short time limit (e.g. 1 minute per argument) or give points for the most convincing ideas.
This format works well both in class and in online breakout rooms.
Class Sharing
- After several turns, invite a few pairs or groups to present their most original or funny arguments to the whole class.
- Classmates can vote on who was more persuasive or add quick counterarguments to keep the debate lively.
- Encourage students to use the Useful Phrases provided to make their opinions clearer and more confident.
