Degree Shift - Modifying Comparatives
Grammar activity
Free
How to Use This Activity:
Individual Work
Students read the card and think of three comparisons between the two options: a small, medium, and big difference. They prepare three short sentences using different degrees of intensity.
Pairs and Small Groups
Students take turns sharing their comparisons. Partners listen and ask one follow-up question (e.g. “Why?”, “In what way?”, “Is that always true?”), and the speaker adds one more comparison or short explanation.
Class Sharing
Invite a few students to share their comparisons with the class. Ask others to improve them by changing the degree of intensity or using a different comparative structure, checking accuracy and variety.
