Don’t Buy This!

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to use:

Offline Version

  • Show the students a slide with a picture of an everyday item.
  • Students work in pairs or small groups.
  • Their job is to imagine they are advertisers who must tell people NOT to buy the item!
  • They use the phrases on the slide to help them explain why the product is bad, silly, or dangerous.
  • After a few minutes, groups can present their "anti-adverts" to the class.

Variation: Make it a challenge! Each pair must come up with three reasons in one minute.

Online Version

  • Share the slide on your screen (or send it in the chat).
  • Students work in breakout rooms, in pairs or small groups.
  • They imagine they are advertisers who want to stop people from buying the product on the screen.
  • They use the helpful phrases to explain their ideas.
  • After a few minutes, bring them back to the main room to share their anti-adverts with the class.

Variation: Use a timer and see who can give the funniest reason in 30 seconds!
