Enhancing Stories - Detail Hunt

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to Use This Activity

Individual Work

  • The student opens a card with a scene (e.g. “Night train platform”).
  • They add strong adjectives, linkers, and sensory details to build a short story (5–6 sentences).
  • Encourage them to describe what they see, hear, smell, or feel, and use narrative linkers to connect ideas.

Pair or Group Work

  • Students work in pairs or small groups.
  • Each student opens a card and tells their story aloud.
  • Partners listen and can react with a short comment or question.
  • Groups can set a time limit (e.g. 1 minute per story) or vote for the most vivid description.

Class Sharing

  • At the end, invite some students to share their stories with the whole class.
  • Classmates can vote for the most descriptive or creative story and give quick reactions.
  • Encourage using the Useful Phrases to make stories clear and engaging.

Optional Variations

  • Story Swap: students tell their story, then swap cards and improve someone else’s version with more details or better linkers.
  • Add a Twist: after the first version, teacher gives a surprise element (e.g. a stranger appears, a phone rings) and students add it.
