First Thing
How to use:
Individual work
- The teacher assigns one or more prompt cards to the student.
-The student reads each prompt and thinks about what they usually do first in that situation.
- They prepare a short answer using “First, I…” or “The first thing I do is…”.
- The teacher can ask simple follow-up questions (e.g. “Why?”, “Every day?”, “At what time?”) to help the student extend their answer.
Pair / Group work
- The teacher assigns one or more prompt cards to each pair or group.
- Students work in pairs or small groups (2–4 students).
- They take turns reading the prompts and sharing their answers.
- Students listen to each other and say if they do the same or something different, then give their own answer.
Class sharing
- Invite some students or groups to share their answers with the class.
- Other students react by saying if they have similar or different habits.
- Focus on clear, simple answers and natural communication.
Extra ideas
- Find 2 matches: Students try to find at least 2 situations where they do the same first thing as their partner.
- Add second and third: After saying what they do first, students continue: what do they do second and third.
