I Use It For…

Individual work

The teacher assigns one or more I Use It For… cards to the student. The student reads the word and thinks about when, where and how they use the object. They then give 2–3 simple examples using the sentence starters provided.

The teacher can model an answer before the activity. For example:
“Phone. I use my phone for messages and music. I use it to take photos. I use it when I travel.”

Encourage the student to:

- give 2–3 different examples
- think about different places or situations
- use the sentence starters provided
- add a little more detail if they can

Extra idea: After several cards, the student chooses one object they use a lot and says more about it: where they use it, when they use it and what they use it for.

Pair/group work (including breakout rooms)

The teacher assigns one or more I Use It For… cards to each pair or group. One student reads the word and gives one example of how they use the object. The other students add different ideas.

Students take turns adding ideas until they cannot think of any more. They then move on to a new card.

Extra idea: Students compare their answers and find out which objects they use in the same way and which they use differently.
