Speaking activity
ENG HUB Pro
How to use:
- Introduce the activity: Explain that each student will invent a new product by combining two ordinary objects. Their goal is to persuade the class that their invention is both unique and practical.
- Present the objects: Show a slide with two objects (e.g., “umbrella” and “toaster”) to spark ideas. Alternatively, allow students to choose their own two items from a prepared list.
- Brainstorm & prepare: Give students a few minutes to think about how the two objects could work together as a new invention. They should consider the purpose, features, and benefits of their product.
- Pair up for pitches: Divide students into pairs and send them to breakout rooms. Each student has 3-5 minutes to present their invention, focusing on making it sound useful and appealing. Their partner can ask questions or offer suggestions to improve the idea.
- Share & discuss: Bring the class back together. Each pair will now join with another pair to form groups of four. Each student will present their invention to the larger group. After each pitch, the group discusses the invention, asking questions and offering feedback.
- Vote for Top Inventions: After all inventions have been presented, hold a class vote to decide on the “Most Innovative,” “Most Practical,” and “Most Creative” inventions.
- Wrap-Up Discussion: End with a class discussion on what made certain inventions stand out and review useful vocabulary and expressions used for persuasion and description.
