Keep It or Leave It

Individual work

• The teacher assigns one or more cards to each student.
• The student reads the summer habit and decides whether they would keep it in autumn or leave it for summer.
• They explain their choice using the sentence starters provided.
• The teacher can model an answer before the activity. For example:
• Encourage students to give a simple reason and, if possible, add one extra detail.

Pair/group work (including breakout rooms)

• The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group.
• Students take turns reading the summer habits and deciding whether they would keep them in autumn or leave them for summer.
• They compare their choices, explain their reasons and ask simple follow-up questions.
• Encourage students to find habits they agree and disagree about before moving on to the next card.

Extra ideas:

• Students find three habits they both want to keep in autumn. (For pairs.)
• Students choose one habit they definitely want to leave for summer.
• Students ask simple follow-up questions, such as “Why?” “How often?” “Where?” or “Who do you do it with?”
• One student guesses whether their partner will keep a habit in autumn or leave it for summer.
• Students sort the cards into two groups: Keep It and Leave It.
• Students choose three habits they most want to continue in autumn.
• Students rank five cards from “Definitely keep it!” to “Definitely leave it!”
• At the end, students share the habit that caused the biggest disagreement.
