How to Use This Activity
Individual Work
- The student reads a short post that tells part of someone’s life story. Each post shows a real-life situation with emotions, problems, or achievements.
- The student writes or says several possible comments using Perfect Modals (e.g. You must have felt nervous. You might have been excited. You shouldn’t have worried so much.).
- Encourage the student to use at least two or three different modal structures for each post, showing different points of view.
Pair or Group Work
- Students work in pairs or small groups. One student reads the post aloud. The others take turns commenting with Perfect Modals, each giving a different idea.
- They can continue until they have at least three unique comments for the same post. After that, they switch roles with another post.
- Groups may give points for original or creative comments, or set a time limit (e.g. 1 minute per post). This format works well in class or in online breakout rooms.
Class Sharing
- After several posts, invite a few students to share their favourite or most interesting comments with the class.
- Classmates can react with short responses like I agree, That’s true, or I didn’t think of that.
- Encourage students to use the Useful Starters provided (You must have… / You might have… / You shouldn’t have…) to build natural comments and practise fluency.
This activity is ideal for practising Perfect Modals in context, improving fluency, and encouraging creative speaking for B2 learners.
