My Favourite and My Least Favourite

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

Individual work

  • The teacher assigns the student one or more category cards.
  • The student thinks of their favourite and least favourite option from the category.
  • They tell the teacher both choices and explain why, using the phrase starters.
  • The teacher can model a sample answer before the activity.

For example: Days of the week — "My favourite is Friday because the weekend starts. My least favourite is Monday because I feel tired."

Encourage students to give reasons and not just name their options.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)

  • The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group.
  • One student names their favourite and least favourite option and explains why.
  • Their partner reacts — do they agree or disagree? — and shares their own choices.
  • Then they swap roles with a new card.

Encourage students to:

  • use the phrase starters
  • give reasons for their choices
  • react to their partner's answers
  • find out what they have in common

Class sharing

Invite some students or groups to share their most interesting answers with the class.

The class can discuss:

  • the most popular favourite options
  • the most surprising least favourites
  • which category was the hardest to choose from
  • whether anyone had the same answers

Focus on fluency, opinion language, and confident speaking in English.
