News Report - Cleft Sentences
How to Use This Activity
Individual Work
Students read the short news item on the slide. They choose one of the sentence starters provided and complete it to comment on the news using a cleft sentence.
This stage helps students focus on meaning while practising accurate sentence structure.
Pairs and Small Groups
Students work in pairs or small groups and take turns reading their completed sentence aloud. Their partners listen and ask one simple follow-up question (e.g. Why that point? Do you agree?).
This stage encourages interaction and reinforces understanding of cleft sentences in context.
Class Sharing
Invite a few students to share their sentences with the class. Other students can react by agreeing, disagreeing, or offering an alternative cleft sentence using a different phrase.
This stage builds confidence, promotes discussion, and allows the teacher to check both form and meaning.
