Odd One Out 2.0

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to Use This Activity

Individual Work

- Give each student one “Odd One Out” card with four words and pictures.
- Students look at the items and decide which one doesn’t belong.
- They write or say one sentence to explain their choice (e.g. “The lion is different because it’s wild.”).
- Encourage them to use simple sentence starters such as I think…, Because it’s…, or It’s different because….
- The focus is on clear communication, not just the “correct” answer.

Pair or Group Work
- Students work in pairs or small groups. Give one or several cards to each group.
- They discuss together and agree on which option is the odd one out and why.
- Encourage them to share different ideas — there can be more than one good answer.
- Monitor and support with vocabulary, pronunciation, or connectors (e.g. and, but, because).
- After one or two minutes, give a new card or rotate them between groups.

Variation:
- Set a time limit (e.g. 60–90 seconds per card).
- Groups can get one point for each original or creative explanation.
- Students can vote for the most interesting reason at the end.

Class Sharing
- After several rounds, ask each group to present one of their favourite cards and their explanation to the class.
- Other students listen and can agree, disagree, or add a new reason.
- Optionally, write a few of the best sentences on the board to highlight correct grammar or interesting vocabulary.
