Pet Peeves Parade

Speaking activity Free

This activity helps students practise sharing opinions, build vocabulary, and engage in lively discussions about common pet peeves. They will explore annoying habits, decide if they find them bothersome, and explain their reasoning.

Offline Lessons

  • Provide each student or group with printed cards featuring pet peeves.
  • In individual lessons, the student reads the card, shares their opinion, and explains why they find it annoying (or not), using personal examples.
  • In group lessons, students work in pairs or small groups, discussing one or more pet peeves from the cards. They share their opinions and reasoning with each other.
  • After group discussions, invite students to share their thoughts with the whole class. Other students can respond, agree, or disagree, fostering active participation.

Online Lessons

  • Share the pet peeve cards digitally, either as slides or images.
  • In individual lessons, display one card at a time. The student shares their opinion, explains their reasoning, and relates it to personal experiences.
  • In group lessons, assign students to breakout rooms in pairs or small groups. Share one or more cards with each group for discussion.
  • After the breakout room discussions, bring everyone back to the main session. Students share their thoughts, and classmates can agree, disagree, or add their own perspectives.

Creative Twist

For both offline and online formats, add a fun element by asking students to imagine a world where everyone ignores a specific pet peeve. Encourage them to describe the funny or chaotic consequences to add humour and spark creativity.
