Reality Check: Crazy Facts or Not?

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to use this activity:

Individual Work

  • Give each student a list of strange or surprising facts. Ask them to read each statement and decide whether they think it’s true or false.
  • Students should give a short explanation or guess why they believe so, using 1–2 sentences.
  • Once finished, they check the real answers and compare them with their guesses.
  • Encourage the use of phrases like:
    I doubt it because…
    It sounds realistic / unlikely / strange…
I’ve never heard that before, but it could be true because...

Pair or Group Work

  • Put students into pairs or small groups. Assign a few facts to each group.
  • They read the facts together, decide which are true or false, and explain their reasoning.
  • Then, they check the real answers and react — were they surprised?
  • Groups can choose their favourite fact and prepare a short explanation for the class.

Class Sharing

Bring everyone together. Invite students to share the most surprising or funny facts and their reactions.
Ask follow-up questions like:
• Did you believe this at first? Why or why not?
• Could something like this happen in your country?
• What would make this fact more believable or less strange?
