Summer Try, Do or Skip

Speaking activity Free

How to use this activity:

Individual work:
- The student works through several cards independently.
- For each activity, they decide whether they would try it, whether they already do it, or whether they would skip it, and explain their choice using because, I'd love to, and I'd rather not.
- They choose the most exciting activity on each card and justify their choice.
- At the end, they summarise their overall preferences and highlight any activities they found particularly surprising or appealing.

Pair/Group Work:
- Students work in pairs or small groups.
- Assign several cards to each pair or group.
- For each activity, students decide whether they would try it, whether they already do it, or whether they would skip it, and explain their choice using because, I'd love to, and I'd rather not.
- They also choose the most exciting activity on each card.
- Afterwards, they share with the class whether they and their partners had similar or different choices, and mention any interesting points from their discussion.

Tips to vary the activity:

  • Ask students to rank the activities from the most to the least appealing before discussing them.
  • Encourage students to find three things they have in common and three activities they disagree on.
  • Have students choose one activity to do together and plan the details (where, when, with whom, and why).
  • Turn it into a Find someone who... activity by asking students to find classmates who already do, would love to try, or would never try different activities.
  • Ask students to add one more summer activity of their own and explain why it should be included on the card set.
