That’s Me / Not Me

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

Individual lesson

  • Give the student several statement cards about everyday habits and situations.
  • The student reads each statement and decides if it is true for them or not.
  • They respond using “That’s me because…” or “Not me, I usually…” and give a short reason.
  • Ask follow-up questions (e.g. “Why?”, “When?”, “How often?”) to extend their answers.
  • Encourage the student to compare different statements and reflect on their habits.
  • At the end, discuss which statements were the most interesting, surprising, or difficult to answer.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)

  • The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group.
  • Students work in pairs or small groups (2–4 students).
  • They take turns reading the statements and responding.
  • After each answer, partners react and ask simple follow-up questions (e.g. “Why?”, “When?”, “Really?”).
  • They compare answers and find similarities and differences.

Class sharing

  • Invite some students or groups to share interesting or surprising answers.
  • Other students can react (“Same!”, “Me too!”, “Not me!”) or add their ideas.
  • Focus on clear speaking and short reasons.

Extra ideas

  • Find your match: find someone with similar answers.
  • Most different: who is the most different in the group?
  • Guess first: students guess the answer before their partner speaks.
