The Awkward Apology
How to play:
-
Introduce the Activity: Explain to students that they will practise giving humorous and creative apologies for awkward or embarrassing situations. Emphasise the importance of tone, expression, and humour.
-
Group Students: Divide students into pairs or small groups, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate and engage.
-
Distribute the Situations: Provide each pair or group with a card containing an awkward or embarrassing scenario. You can let them choose or assign the scenarios randomly.
-
Plan the Apologies: In their pairs or groups, students should discuss and plan their apologies together. Encourage them to brainstorm how to make the apology sound genuine while incorporating humour and creativity.
-
Role-Play the Apologies: Each pair or group takes turns role-playing within their group. One student delivers the apology as if addressing the others in their group, who act as the person or people being apologised to.
-
Interactive Questions: After each apology, the group members ask follow-up questions or make comments about the apology. The apologising student must respond while staying in character.
-
Add an Extra Twist: To make the activity more challenging, assign specific phrases (e.g., “It was all a misunderstanding”) or quirky constraints (e.g., apologise as a celebrity) for students to include in their apologies.
-
Group Reflection: After the activity, guide each group to briefly discuss what made certain apologies feel more sincere or funny. Encourage them to share any standout moments with the whole class.
