The Curious Collector

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

This activity helps beginner students practise expressing reasons and ideas in English while building confidence in speaking. Students imagine they are collectors of something unusual and explain why they collect it. The activity fosters creativity, personal expression, and descriptive language, making it engaging and interactive.

Offline Lessons

  • Individual Lessons: Provide the student with a printed card. Ask them to imagine they collect the item on the card and explain why. Encourage the use of simple sentence starters like, “I collect ___ because…” to guide their responses.
  • Group Lessons: Distribute printed cards to pairs or small groups, and ask each student to select an item and explain why they collect it. Afterward, students can share their responses with the whole class.

Online Lessons

  • Individual Lessons: Share digital cards or slides featuring unusual items (e.g., feathers, old coins, or seashells). Ask the student to choose one item, imagine they collect it, and explain why they find it interesting or meaningful. Use sentence starters like, "I collect ___ because…" to guide their response.
  • Group Lessons: Display the cards or slides on the screen during the lesson. Assign students to breakout rooms in pairs or small groups, where each person picks a card and explains why they would collect that item. Encourage them to listen actively and ask each other questions like, "What makes it your favourite?" or "Where would you find it?"
  • Class Sharing: After breakout room discussions, bring everyone back to the main session. Students can take turns presenting their chosen items and reasons for collecting them, while the rest of the class can respond or share related ideas.
