The Curious Collector 2.0

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to use

Offline Lessons

Give each student a printed card with a picture or name of a collectible item (e.g., matchboxes, old train tickets, or keychains). Ask them to imagine they collect the item and explain why. Use helpful sentence stems like “I started collecting ___ because…” or “This item is special to me…” to guide their answers.

Group work:

Distribute a set of cards to small groups. Each student picks one item and takes turns explaining their collection to the group. Afterward, hold a short class discussion where students share interesting collections they heard about, using follow-up questions like “Have you ever seen one like that?” or “Would you like to collect that too?”

Online Lessons

Present students with a slide or image set showing unique collectible items. Ask the student to explain why they would collect it. Support their response with sentence frames and gentle follow-up prompts like “Where did you find it?” or “What do you like about it?”

Group work:

Show a collection of digital cards on screen, then send students to breakout rooms in pairs or small groups. Each person selects one item and explains their collection. Encourage curiosity by asking students to react to each other’s ideas with questions such as “How many would you want to have?” or “What’s the rarest one?”

Class Sharing:

After breakout discussions, return to the main session for a short sharing round. Students can describe their chosen item and why they collect it. Others can comment, ask questions, or connect it to something they’ve seen or collected themselves.
