The Upgrade
Individual Work
Show the student one card. Ask them to think of one or more changes that could improve the object or system on the card (e.g. fast food, public transport, school schedule).
They explain their upgrade using 2–3 full sentences, and give a short reason why the change would be useful or important.
Encourage them to use the Useful Phrases and speak in full, clear sentences.
Pair or Group Work
Put students into pairs or small groups (or breakout rooms if online). You can also assign one or two cards per group.
Each group discusses how the object/system could be upgraded.
They brainstorm a few possible ideas, choose the best one, and explain it clearly to each other.
Class Sharing
Bring the group back together. Invite students to share their ideas and upgrades with the class.
Ask follow-up questions like:
– Would this work in your country?
– What could go wrong?
– Would you actually use it?
This step works well as a mini-debate or group feedback session.
