Turn It Into a Reel

How to Use This Activity

Individual Work

The student gets a card with a prompt (e.g. “A trip by train”). They imagine it as a social media reel, give it a catchy title, tell the story in 5–6 sentences in the past, and add 2–3 hashtags. Optionally, they invent one short public comment as a reaction. Encourage use of past tenses and at least one extra detail (people, emotions, surprises).

Pair and Group Work

  • Brainstorm & Build: In pairs/small groups, students first brainstorm together possible story ideas for their prompts (2–3 minutes). Then, each quickly drafts their “reel.”

  • Switch & Share: Instead of long turn-taking, use short timed rounds (e.g. 30–45 seconds per reel). After sharing, partners immediately react with a funny comment, emoji, or mini-question.

  • Reel Remix: After hearing one reel, another student adds a “plot twist” sentence or alternative ending to keep it lively.

  • Breakout Rooms Online: In breakout rooms, groups work in parallel. After 5 minutes, switch groups or swap one student between rooms to bring fresh stories and comments.

Whole-Class Sharing

At the end, invite a few volunteers to share their best/funniest reels with everyone. The class can vote with quick reactions (e.g. thumbs-up, emojis, or short chat comments). This creates a lively, social-media-style atmosphere.
