Unwritten Rule

Individual work
- The teacher assigns one or more Unwritten Rule cards to the student.
- The student reads each situation and decides whether it is OK to do it and whether there is an unwritten social rule connected to it.
- The student explains their opinion and gives reasons for their answer.
- The student then shares a personal experience or a similar situation from their own life.

Encourage students to:
- use the useful phrases
- explain why they agree or disagree with the rule
- think about whether the rule is common in their family, friend group or culture
- share a personal experience or example
- suggest what they would normally do in this situation

Extra idea: After discussing several cards, ask the student to choose the three strongest unwritten rules and one rule they think is unnecessary or outdated.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)
- The teacher assigns one or more Unwritten Rule cards to each pair or group.
- One student reads a situation and gives their opinion: is it OK to do this, and is there an unwritten rule about it?
- Their partner or group members react, agree or disagree and explain their reasons.
- Students compare what they would personally do and share any similar experiences they have had.
- Encourage students to find situations where not everyone agrees and discuss why the rule may be different depending on age, culture, family or friend group.
- Students then move on to a new card.
