What Do You Do When 3.0

Individual work

• The teacher assigns one or more cards to the student. The student looks at the situation on the card and thinks about what they usually do when this happens. They then describe their typical reaction using the sentence starters provided.
• The teacher can model an answer before the activity. 
• Encourage the student to give 2–3 things they might do and add a simple reason or extra detail.

Pair/group work (including breakout rooms)

• The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group. One student looks at the card and explains what they usually do in that situation. The other students listen and share what they do in the same situation.
• Students take turns answering, asking follow-up questions and comparing their habits. Encourage them to find out which of their answers are similar and which are completely different before moving on to the next card.

Extra ideas

• Students find three situations where they would do the same thing as their partner.
• Students choose the easiest and most difficult situations for them and explain why.
• After answering, another student asks one follow-up question, e.g. “Why?”, “How often?”, “Who with?” or “What do you do then?”
• Students choose a card and try to guess their partner’s answer before hearing it.
• Students rank 5–6 cards from “No problem!” to “Big problem!” and compare their choices.
• At the end, students choose the situation where their answers differed the most and tell the class about it.
