How to Use This Activity
Individual Work
- The student looks at the card on the screen. Each card shows an everyday action such as ordering food online, traveling abroad, or listening to podcasts.
- The student then answers the question “Why do people…?” aloud, giving at least two different reasons with clauses of purpose.
- Encourage the student to use a variety of structures (to, so as to, in order to, so that) and to expand their answers with details.
Pair or Group Work
- Students work in pairs or small groups. One student chooses a card and asks, “Why do people…?”. The partner answers using at least two purpose clauses. Then they switch roles.
- Groups can set a time limit (e.g., 30 seconds per answer) or award points for using all four target structures to keep the activity engaging and competitive.
- After several turns, invite a few students to share interesting or unusual answers with the class. Classmates can compare their ideas, add extra reasons, or reformulate sentences using different clauses of purpose.
- Encourage students to refer to the Useful Phrases provided, ensuring both accuracy and variety in grammar.
This activity is ideal for controlled speaking practice of clauses of purpose at the B1–B2 level and works well as either a grammar-focused exercise or a communicative fluency task.
