Winter Blind Rankings

Speaking activity ENG HUB Pro

How to Use This Activity

Individual Preparation

  • Students receive a card with five winter objects. Without seeing the situation, they must rank the items from 1–5 (1 = most useful, 5 = least useful).
  • Ask students to think briefly about why they chose this order and prepare explanations.

Pair or Group Work

  • Place students in pairs or small groups.
  • They reveal the winter situation and must reorder their ranking to match the new context.
  • Encourage them to negotiate politely, justify their choices, and challenge their partner’s reasoning.
  • After 2–3 minutes, groups can switch cards or rotate to a new situation to repeat the discussion.

Sharing & Comparison

  • Invite a few pairs or groups to present their final ranking to the class.
  • Another group can briefly act as a “challenge team” by asking questions.
  • Optionally, ask students to reformulate one of their arguments using stronger justification structures (e.g. The main reason is…, It becomes essential when…).
  • Encourage reasoning, negotiation, and clear explanations throughout the task.
